First Custom Wand

Hi all,

Just to write a little update – been busy in the workshop over the last couple of weekends and getting some wonderful reactions on Etsy where I’m pleased to say stuff is flying out of the door 🙂

I got a request earlier this week from a customer to produce an 18″ wand out of Ash, so was really disappointed at first to find i had no suitable lumber in the shop.  I then remembered my brilliant go-to wood guy robin because of Covid and personal stuff at the top of the year I haven’t really been actively buying any lumber.  Last year, he provided me with some lovely cherry for a worktop project for a colleague and some yew for some of the wands I make.  Gave him a call and he’s sorted me out with a gorgeous piece of Ash and some pieces of Elm and Witch Elm that I am eager to start turning into something (haven’t decided yet).

Anyway, he is awesome and you can find him here on the Web or at Facebook

Anyway, the wand 🙂

Challenging turn as it is so long and tapers to quite a small diameter, was a bit shaky towards the end but pleased to say it “turned” out well 🙂

On its way to the customer (who is really lovely by the way) and hopefully will be a super match as taylored to the size of his hands and to the style he requested.

Was a real pleasure at turning something specifically requested for and just waiting for his response once he receives it.  The grain on this was really nice and there is a beautiful swirl just above the top of the handle.  I think this is one of the most rewarding things from turning, you never quite know how its going to look, and I’m always suprised 🙂

All the best for now and will update once I’ve had word from my customer 🙂

Damian
